Make that two big name MLS players that Scottish giants Celtic Glasgow are pursuing. After weekend reports of discussions with Swedish midfielder Freddie Ljungberg, Toronto FC fans woke up Monday to see news of their captain in Celtic's crosshairs.
Scotland's Evening Standard reports that Celtic manager Neil Lennon has confirmed that the Glasgow club will be looking at the possibility of having Dwayne De Rosario join the club on trial.
“Dwayne might be another one who we may be able to bring in for a week or so to have a look at him," Lennon told Monday's Evening Standard. "He’s a player who has been put to me. I’ve not had time to see much of him. But hopefully today I will get the chance to view some footage of him to see what I think.”
De Rosario was involved in an infamous check-writing goal celebration during the 2010 season as part of a public appeal by the Canadian international to have his compensation adjusted.
The report indicated that De Rosario is in his second year of a four-year contract, meaning any move would have to involve a loan or a transfer fee that would make the move permanent.
Ljungberg, on the other hand, is out of contract after spending the last two seasons with the Seattle Sounders and Chicago Fire. He credits his time in MLS with allowing him to correct serious injury issues and return to full fitness.
Depending on how fast a deal can get done, one or both of the players could potentially be available for the renowned Old Firm derby next Sunday against former Toronto FC midfielder Maurice Edu and Rangers.
“It could be both [Ljungberg and De Rosario]," Lennon said. "There are opportunities there."
