VENTURA, Calif. ā In 1990, most of the players at the current Whitecaps FC offseason training camp were still in diapers. Colin Miller and Tom Soehn, meanwhile, were in the prime of their playing careers.
The duo were teammates, playing together for the Hamilton Steelers in the old Canadian Soccer League. They were also roommates, living together with former Canadian international Paul James.
Now theyāre teaming up againāthis time with the Vancouver Whitecaps, where Miller is an assistant coach and Soehn is the director of soccer operations.
āIt had been a while since Iād seen him,ā said Soehn. āItās always good to catch up with old mates.ā
Both men were gritty, hard-nosed defensive players who werenāt afraid to do the dirty workātraits that helped each achieve great success on the field. Miller split his playing career between Canada and Scotland, notably playing two seasons with Scottish giants Rangers. He also earned 61 caps for the Canadian national team, scoring five goals.
āColin was a guy that showed up every day and you knew what you were going to get,ā Soehn said of Miller.
Soehn, meanwhile, had a celebrated MLS career, winning three US Open Cups and one MLS Cup with the Dallas Burn and Chicago Fire.
[inline_node:324559]āHe was a wholehearted guy and he always worked hard,ā Miller said of his former teammate. āWe were never the most graceful players on the field, but no one could ever question our commitment.ā
Though the two played similar styles, Miller makes no mistake in distinguishing between their contributions while playing together.
āIf you notice, I have a small hump on my back thatās actually from carrying Tommy,ā Miller said jokingly. āHeāll probably say otherwise, but I know different.ā
Jokes aside, Miller has great admiration for the work that Soehn has done with Vancouver.
āIt was nice to see that heād been appointed to his position with the Whitecaps,ā Miller said. āHeās been around the MLS for a long time and he obviously knows the ins and outs. Heās done a great job so far with the club, and itās nice to be back with such a great staff.ā
According to Soehn, the respect is mutual.
āHe was a great pro on and off the field and heās carried that into his coaching career,ā he said. āIāve got a genuine respect for him.ā
