De los Cobos: Bone not up to task against KC

Chicago's Corben Bone earned his first MLS start on Tuesday against Kansas City, but he was subbed out in the 38th minute.

BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. ā€“ Chicago Fire head coach Carlos de los Cobos explained the 38th-minute substitution of rookie midfielder Corben Bone from Tuesdayā€™s 2-0 loss to Kansas City in his postmatch press conference, saying that the teamā€™s first round draft pick ā€“ who was making his first career MLS start ā€“ didnā€™t have the right mentality while on the field.

ā€œHe showed very little in the time he was on the field,ā€ de los Cobos said through a translator. ā€œI understand that heā€™s a young player, but when this opportunity presents itself to players, they need to understand that they have the right attitude, and I just didnā€™t see that attitude in Corben. I wish he couldā€™ve played all 90 minutes, but I just saw a very passive player.ā€

Bone, who hasnā€™t received significant minutes in any competition since July, told MLSsoccer.com that de los Cobos never told him why he was removed.

ā€œHe didnā€™t say anything when he brought me off,ā€ said Bone, who was replaced by Patrick Nyarko. ā€œIt wasnā€™t my best performance and heā€™s the coach, so itā€™s his decision.ā€

The move couldnā€™t have done much for Boneā€™s confidence, especially considering that the Fire ā€“ who were eliminated from the playoffs last Saturday night ā€“ didnā€™t have anything to lose by playing him Tuesday.

ā€œGot to take it for what itā€™s worth,ā€ Bone said. ā€œI got to keep my head up and keep doing what Iā€™ve been doing and keep moving forward. Itā€™s the past now, so I canā€™t really do anything about it.

ā€œI think Iā€™ve been training really well,ā€ he added. ā€œI havenā€™t played much in a game since SuperLiga three or four months ago, so itā€™s difficult. But Iā€™ve been training well and Iā€™m going to keep doing that, and hopefully and the next time I get a start Iā€™ll get a little bit more minutes.ā€
