13-year Chicago vet Brown mulls what comes next

Fire defender C.J. Brown says they need to limit New York's chances at goal.

BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. ā€” A disheartened C.J. Brown told assembled members of the media after the Fireā€™s 2-0 loss to the Wizards Tuesday night that he doesnā€™t know if heā€™ll be back in uniform next season.

ā€œIā€™ve put a lot of thought into that,ā€ Brown said about his plans for next year. ā€œEvery day, me and my wife battle with it. We try to figure out whatā€™s the best opportunity and whatā€™s going to happen with me next year. Right now itā€™s up in the air.ā€

Brown, 35, is the last remaining Fire original. The veteran center back has spent his entire 13-year MLS career in Chicago. He leads the team with 25 appearances this year but will be out of contract at the end of the season.

ā€œIf I keep getting beat up like this,ā€ Brown said, referring to a knee injury he picked up Tuesday night, ā€œI definitely wonā€™t do it, but I donā€™t know. The body sometimes feels great, sometimes it doesnā€™t. Itā€™s the same story I tell everybody, Iā€™m not sure. Iā€™ll know in the next few weeks.ā€

Brown said that the Fireā€™s disappointing 2010 campaignā€”the team will miss the playoffs for just the second time in franchise history this yearā€”wonā€™t push him toward retirement.

ā€œ[A poor season] would motivate me to come back and do things better,ā€ he said. ā€œThatā€™s been my motivation most years; itā€™s what I can do better to help the team so I try to come back one more year to make things better.

"This would be the perfect reason to stay, to try to go out on the right note. [This yearā€™s] definitely frustrating but I wouldnā€™t let that be the reason why I would leave, thatā€™s for sure.ā€
