With big-name players being signed all around the league, the San Jose Earthquakes and Columbus Crew cleared some space on their rosters on Monday.
The Quakes released Argentine midfielder Javier Robles, who joined this offseason and made two appearances for the club. Meanwhile, the Crew said goodbye to rookie midfielder Othaniel Yanez.
Robles only appeared twice for the Quakes. First, on opening night against Real Salt Lake, where he was subbed at halftime in an eventual 3-0 loss. On June 25, his last appearance, the midfielder again played against RSL in a 0-0 draw.
Robles' release from San Jose could signify that one or more players may be added to the roster before the transfer window closes on Aug. 15, as both San Jose head coach Frank Yallop and general manager John Doyle have acknowledged an urgency to sign an attacker after a season-ending knee surgery for Brazilian midfielder Andre Luiz and a series of injuries for Brazilian forward Eduardo.
Yanez, on the other hand, failed to appear for Columbus during the season. Chosen as in the fourth round of the 2010 MLS SuperDraft (61st overall), Yanez had a standout career during his four years at the University of Louisville, where he tallied five goals four assists and earned honors as team MVP twice during his four-year career there.
A 4th-round SuperDraft pick out of the University of Louisville, Yanez failed to appear for the club in his time in Columbus.
