RBNY Player Ratings after loss in Columbus

Luke Sassano (left) got a surprise start Saturday, but his good play wasn't enough to hold down Columbus.

The Red Bullsā€™ loss to Columbus on Saturday night snapped their five-game stretch of results, and New York were roundly outplayed in the 2-0 loss. The player ratings:

GK-Bouna Coundoul: Canā€™t fault Bouna on either goal. Made several nice stops in the first half and he is controlling his area very well. Tough loss for the Senegalese. Rating: 7.5

D-Luke Sassano: Surprise starter but he showed fairly well. One of the few New York defenders to move forward into the attack consistently. Too bad it was rarely rewarded. Rating: 6

D-Carlos Mendes: Looked like some miscommunication on Columbus' first goal. Overall though, a rock-solid defensive effort in the face of continued Crew pressure. Rating: 6.5

D-Tim Ream: Positionally got caught out a few times in what head coach Hans Backe will surely call an ā€œindividual mistake.ā€ Rating: 5

D-Danleigh Borman: Was quiet but solid and found it difficult to move forward into the attack down the left flank, especially since New York attacked so little. Rating: 6

M-Roy Miller: Tough for the left back to get the nod to start the game on the right wing. Tentative in moving forward. Rating: 5.5

M-Seth Stammler: Always seemed a step behind the play. As the midfield destroyer, that's rarely a good sign. Rating: 5

M-Joel Lindpere: Heā€™s supposed to be the teamā€™s central player and the cog of the midfield. But Lindpere had to drop back way too much throughout the game and was rarely effective in attacking. Rating: 5.5

M-Sinisa Ubiparipovic: Heā€™s been solid all year, but Saturday night was a clunker for ā€œUbi.ā€ Rarely got forward and seemed a step slow all game. Rating: 5

F-Juan Pablo Angel: Got to feel badly for the Colombian star, who rarely saw the ball and did most of his work defensively. Kudos on great team effort and work rate, though. Rating: 6

F-Dane Richards: His rating will be skewed because he rarely got the ball and played out of position. Richards was rarely dangerous because he was rarely given the chance to be dangerous. Rating: 5

Substitutions

M-Tony Tchani: His insertion into the game helped steady and calm the midfield. Tchani showed well coming into an adverse situation. Rating: 6.5

F-Macoumba Kandji: Looked fit to play and his touch was good, Mac was perhaps the teamā€™s best attacker on the night. Rating: 6.5

M-Carl Robinson: Debut match after knee surgery shelved him in late May. Like Kandji and Tchani, it was a tough spot in which to be thrown. Rating: 5
