Espinoza: Everything is not lost yet for Honduras

Roger Espinoza was a surprise starter for Honduras against Chile.

Kansas City Wizards midfielder Roger Espinoza got an unexpected start for Honduras on Wednesday in Johannesburg. Los Catrachos lost 1-0 against a scintillating, attacking Chilean side.

Honduras now sit at the bottom of Group H, tied with Spain, who lost to Switzerland. But Espinoza does not think the CONCACAF side are out of it.

“As with any loss this hurts, even more so because we had the game under control,” Espinoza said after the game. “Then they (Chile) scored on a weird play, they were given the lead and they knew had to defend it. But we will still have two more chances. Everything is not lost yet.”

Honduras are massive underdogs against Spain, despite the Spaniards’ surprising defeat to the Swiss. But Espinoza is staying optimistic.

“If we apply ourselves, are organized and control the ball,” he said, “we can get some points.”
