NEW YORK — Real Salt Lake enjoyed a record-breaking month of May with a club-best five wins in five matches. It was only right that one of their star players was recognized for it.
RSL’s Costa Rican international forward Alvaro Saborio was honored on Tuesday with the MLS Player of the Month award for May, as voted on by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR). He scored four goals and registered three assists in those five games as the defending champs surged into second place in the Western Conference.
Saborío, who joined the team in March, started every game of RSL’s club record winning streak and had a goal or an assist in each contest.
After a slow start in which he worked his way back to full fitness, the striker has established himself as an early season candidate for the newcomer of the year award. He was previously honored by NASR as Player of the Week in Week 8 after netting a double against the Houston Dynamo.
A veteran of the 2006 World Cup, the 28-year-old has a total of five goals and three assists in the current 2010 MLS campaign.
