Toronto FC terminate Gerba's contract

Ali Gerba

Toronto FC have terminated forward Ali Gerba's contract and signed 2010 draftee Joseph Nane, the club announced today.

Gerba's future at BMO Field had been in doubt since Toronto sent the 28-year-old home from their preseason camp in South Carolina last month.

Team general manager Mo Johnston told reporters at the time that Gerba's play "was not up to scratch," but that the club had not released him. Gerba originally signed a guaranteed contract when he joined the club on June 23, 2009.

The Cameroon-born Canadian international started five games for the Reds last season, scoring one goal. He was acquired after being released from third-tier English side Milton Keynes Dons.

The move freed up roster space for Toronto, which also announced the signing of midfielder Joseph Nane this afternoon.

"Joseph is a good young prospect," Johnston said. "Our coaching staff is looking forward to working with him, and helping him develop into a good young player for us."

Toronto selected the Old Dominion University product in the fourth round, 53rd overall, of the 2010 SuperDraft.
