KANSAS CITY, MO - Announced today by U.S. Soccer live on ESPN, Kansas City Wizards players Eddie Johnson, Josh Wolff, and Jimmy Conrad were selected to the 2006 United States World Cup team. The Wizards were the only Major League Soccer team to have multiple players selected to the preliminary field of participants that will represent the U.S. in this summer's World Cup in Germany. Kansas City midfielder Kerry Zavagnin was listed as an alternate.
A member of the 2002 World Cup squad that advanced to the quarterfinals, Wolff will be making his second World Cup appearance. Johnson, Wolff's Wizards forward linemate, and Conrad, the 2005 MLS Defender of the Year, will be making their first appearances on the team. A total of 11 players from MLS sides were selected, including the Wizards' three.
All three players will be playing for the first-place Wizards this Saturday when they host Eastern Conference foe the Chicago Fire at 7:30 p.m. in Arrowhead Stadium. The players selected to the World Cup squad will report to the U.S. camp on May 10th in Cary, N.C.
