Rapids lay sod at new stadium

The Colorado Rapids today held an exclusive media event at the New Rapids Stadium in Commerce City to ceremonially lay the last piece of sod on the Rapids' playing field.

On hand at the event were Rapids Managing Director Jeff Plush, who spoke to media members about the historic significance of the event, KSE Executive Vice President Paul Andrews, Rapids Head Coach Fernando Clavijo, and Rapids players Joe Cannon and Aitor Karanka, who ceremonially laid the last pieces of sod onto the field with the help of 2 local kids from local Commerce City neighborhoods.

"Putting the sod in on the Rapids' playing surface this early will really help the pitch get established. Laying it in before this fall will help all the roots get into place, and giving it 8 months to grow before the stadium officially opens really helps us to prepare to have the best possible surface for the Rapids Opening Day in April 2007," said Bret Baird, Head Turf Manager of the New Rapids Stadium Complex.
