Rapids 1, Wizards 0 -- quote sheet

COLORADO RAPIDS 1, KANSAS CITY WIZARDS 0

COLORADO RAPIDS HEAD COACH FERNANDO CLAVIJO

On the game:
"Sometimes you need to win, and good teams find ways to win. We did that tonight. We knew that they were going to counter; it's the way they play. The good was a great effort by Thiago (Martins) but great finishing by Clint Mathis."

On the team's depth:
"Like I said last year, we need to use our whole roster throughout the season."

On Clint Mathis:
"He has been all that I have wanted him to be. I didn't bring him here only to score goals but to help us win the championship. We needed him tonight and he came on the field for 15 minutes and he did his job."

COLORADO RAPIDS MIDFIELDER CLINT MATHIS

On his goal:
"(Thiago Martins) made a great run and a great cutback. We made a little bit of eye contact and he held the ball until he played it to the right spot. As long as we win it doesn't matter if I score or not. Today was my day, I didn't score on Tuesday when I had that breakaway. I joked after that game that I would only score when we needed it. Call it luck or good fortune but we needed a win and we got it tonight."

COLORADO RAPIDS FORWARD THIAGO MARTINS

On the goal:
"Nicolas (Hernandez) and I always connect well and tonight he was looking for me. I played him a ball and he put the ball into space in front of me. I saw the defender and faked the cross and cut back. I looked up and saw that I had to make some time because Nick Garcia was marking Clint at the far post. I waited for Clint to lose him and at the right time I played him and he finished it. It's good to know we have a strong group. Any game, any day we can come in and score. I'm really happy to help the team win"

KANSAS CITY WIZARDS HEAD COACH BOB GANSLER

On the game:
"We are obviously struggling on offense. Just like if you are in a slump in any other sport, you have to strap it on and go again. You have to get back on the horse, you have to keep swinging in baseball and keep shooting in basketball. It's the same, we have to keep playing. I thought we played a good first half and we had some decent looks after the first 10 minutes when you know they are going to come out strong. The first half was even at worst for us and in the second half we slowed down a little bit; we are a tired bunch. It was an everyday play that beat us defensively, but obviously we have to generate a little bit more on the offensive side."

KANSAS CITY WIZARDS DEFENDER TYSON WAHL

On the game:
"It was a well fought game. We tried to limit their chances, and for the majority of the game we did. We just have to learn that you have to play the full 90 minutes and concentrate all the way to the end and you can't really allow anything like that to slip by. It was pretty disappointing but you just have to learn from your mistakes and look forward to the next game. Whenever you have a bad (game) you always want to get out there and turn it around as quick as possible."
