Moreno named MLS Player of the Week

Jaime Moreno scored twice Saturday for United.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Jaime Moreno, D.C. United's long-time star striker, was named Major League Soccer Player of the Week for week two of the 2006 season. Moreno scored both of United's goals in a 2-0 victory over visiting Chivas USA on April 8, bringing his MLS career goal scoring total to 96, second all-time among MLS players.

Moreno broke a 0-0 deadlock in the 59th minute, scoring a goal off a chaotic near-collision with Chivas goalie Brad Guzan. Christian Gomez's through ball was played a little too far for Moreno, giving Guzan a chance to run out of his box to clear the ball. Moreno did not give up on the play, however, and as the two players converged on the ball Guzan's clearance ricocheted off Moreno's leg and bounced into the goal.

The Bolivian international then added to his tally in the dying moments of the game, as United caught Chivas on the counterattack. Freddy Adu's well-placed pass over the top of the Chivas defense found a streaking Jamil Walker, who crossed in to Moreno at the top of the box. Moreno one-timed it in with his left foot to put the game out of reach. One of only 10 players to play in all 11 MLS seasons, Moreno now sits just four goals behind Real Salt Lake forward Jason Kreis on the MLS all-time scoring list.

The Major League Soccer Player of the Week is selected every week throughout the MLS regular season by a panel of journalists from the Professional Soccer Reporters Association (PSRA).
