Crew continues impressive run with 2-0 victory over UC Irvine

IRVINE, Calif. - Jason Garey and Aaron Chandler scored on either side of halftime to give the Columbus Crew its seventh consecutive victory of the preseason, a 2-0 decision over the University of California Irvine at its Anteater Stadium Friday night. The Crew now owns a 7-1-1 record this preseason.

Garey opened the scoring, heading home a Danny Szetela corner kick in the 30th minute. Szetela assisted on the second goal, as well, which came in the 70th minute and was Chandler's fourth of the preseason. After receiving a long ball from the back, Szetela played the ball wide to Robbie Rogers on the left. Rogers served a ball into the box for Chandler, who settled and half-volleyed it in off the post.

The Crew has now scored 16 goals in its last five exhibition matches. Andy Gruenebaum and Bill Gaudette shared the shutout in goal. The Crew returns to MLS competition Sunday (March 18), squaring off against the Los Angeles Galaxy at the College of the Canyons in Santa Clarita, Calif., at 8 p.m. (ET).

Founded by Lamar Hunt, the Columbus Crew is Ohio's Major League Soccer club, anchoring a diverse sports and entertainment enterprise. One of the league's Charter Members, it will open its 12th season overall and ninth in first-of-its-kind Columbus Crew Stadium on Saturday, April 7, when it plays host to Claudio Reyna and the Eastern Conference-rival New York Red Bulls.
