Weekly update: Still fighting

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Crew remains on the road this weekend to take on the New England Revolution on Saturday, September 10, at 7:30 p.m. (ET) at Gillette Stadium.


  Saturday's game matches The Crew with the first-place team from the Eastern Conference, allowing them a chance to pick up more points in the race for the final playoff spot in the same conference.  The team is currently 12 points away from the fourth and final playoff spot with just six games remaining.</p>


  The Crew (9-12-3, 30 pts.) is 5-2-1 under Interim Head Coach Robert Warzycha after downing Chivas USA, 3-0, on the road in Los Angeles on Saturday.  All three wins have been shutouts, with the last two on the road.  New England (14-5-6, 48 pts.) sits in first place in the Eastern Conference after a 1-0 victory over Real Salt Lake on the road on Saturday.</p>


  Saturday's game against New England will not be televised locally and can be seen only on the MLS Direct Kick package.  It can also be heard in English on 103.9, TED-FM, or on-line at TheCrew.com and MLSnet.com.</p>

BUFFALO WILD WINGS SET FOR CREW AWAY GAME VIEWING PARTY ON SATURDAY

 Buffalo Wild Wings Grill &amp; Bar on Bethel Road, the "Official Away Game Headquarters" for all Crew road games, will host a viewing party on Saturday, September 10, at 7:30 p.m. for The Crew's game at New England.  Saturday's game is televised only on the MLS Direct Kick package.  Buffalo Wild Wings is located on 5240 Bethel Centre Mall.</p>


BUDDLE CLEARED TO PLAY BY SABH DOCTORS

 Major League Soccer announced on Friday, Sept. 2, that Crew forward Edson Buddle has completed his assessment pursuant to MLS' Substance Abuse and Behavioral Health ("SABH") Policy. Buddle has been cleared to participate in MLS matches by the SABH Program doctors.
 "The organization is pleased at the mature approach Edson has displayed in dealing with this matter," said Crew General Manager Mark McCullers. "His positive attitude is why the process has been completed so quickly. We are looking forward to his return." </p>


U.S. CLINCHES WORLD CUP BERTH WITH 2-0 WIN OVER MEXICO AT CREW STADIUM

 The U.S. Men's National Team earned a berth to the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany with a 2-0 victory against Mexico on Saturday, Sept. 3, in front of a raucous sold-out crowd of 24,685 fans at Columbus Crew Stadium.  After a scoreless first half, Steve Ralston and DaMarcus Beasley scored in a six-minute span to qualify the U.S. for their fifth consecutive World Cup.</p>


 This is the first time since 1934 that the U.S. was the first team from the CONCACAF region to qualify for the World Cup, as Mexico was unable to clinch with the defeat.  The U.S. became the eighth country to qualify for the 32-team FIFA World Cup, joining host Germany, Japan, Iran, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, Argentina and Ukraine, which also qualified on Saturday.  The draw for the 2006 FIFA World Cup will be held on December 9 in Leipzig, Germany.</p>


 With the victory, the U.S. sits atop the hexagonal at 18 points, two ahead of Mexico, with three matches still left to play in the final round of CONCACAF qualifying.  The U.S. will travel to Guatemala City today in preparation for the game against Guatemala at Estadio Mateo Flores on Wednesday (live at 10 p.m. ET on ESPN2).</p>


SECOND ANNUAL CREW SOCCER FOUNDATION SILENT AUCTION ON TAP FOR SEPTEMBER 17

 Crew General Manager Mark McCullers announced that the Second Annual Crew Soccer Foundation Silent Auction will be held on Saturday, September 17, in conjunction with The Crew's 7:30 p.m. game vs. Chicago that evening.</p>


 The auction will take place in the Stadium Club tent located on the west side of Crew Stadium beginning at 6 p.m., when gates open for the game, and running for an hour and a half until the game kicks off at 7:30 p.m. It will then close at 7:30 p.m. for the duration of the game, before resuming for another 45 minutes following the game.</p>


 All proceeds will go to the Crew Soccer Foundation, the club's charitable arm [501(c)(3)], whose initiatives include the successful Kicks for Kids program - now in its eighth season - which affords deserving children, who might not otherwise have the opportunity, the chance to attend Crew home games.</p>


 The auction,coordinated by Crew assistant coach/director of soccer business Mike Lapper, will provide an opportunity for fans to bid on some fabulous, unique items and packages. In addition to priceless soccer memorabilia, there will also be a wide variety of auction items from a great many supporting organizations and companies.</p>


 Among the items that have been donated to the auction so far are framed jerseys from soccer stars Brad Friedel, Freddy Adu, and Tony Meola; Golf foursomes to some of the finest private golf courses in central Ohio; Romantic packages, including hotel stays and fine dining gift certificates; Getaway packages; gift baskets and many more great packages and items.</p>
