D.C. United 3, Earthquakes 0; Friday, July 15, 2005; R.F.K. Stadium; Washington, DC
The San Jose Earthquakes saw their seven-game unbeaten streak come to an end at R.F.K. Stadium, as defending MLS Cup Champion D.C. United defeated the Quakes 3-0 on a humid, muggy night. Playing their third straight road game, the Quakes could not recover from a two-goal night from Christian Gomez, and United handed San Jose its first loss in eight games. The Quakes had their first scoring opportunity in the 17th minute when Dwayne De Rosario, who joined the club in Washington on Thursday after playing three games with Canada in the CONCACAF Gold Cup, received a pass at the top of the left side of the United penalty area and dribbled just into the box before unleashing a hard blast just wide of the near post. D.C. United took the lead in the 25th minute on a nice long-range shot from Gomez. Gomez received the ball from the right side in the center of the field about 25 yards in front of the Earthquakes goal. The open Gomez took a touch forward before rocketing a low blast to the right of a fully extended Onstad for a 1-0 lead. De Rosario nearly evened the score at 1-1 in the 37th minute after he stole the ball from Moreno near midfield and turned toward goal. De Rosario streaked into the box, slicing between three defenders before unleashing a hard shot to the far post that United goalkeeper Nick Rimando was able to knock away. With the Earthquakes attempting to get back into the game to start the second half, D.C. United was able to up its lead to 2-0 in the 50th minute on a goal by Moreno. Josh Gros lofted an excellent cross from the left side to Moreno near the middle of the penalty area. Moreno brought the ball down and sent a hard shot on goal that beat Onstad. D.C. United took a 3-0 lead in the 70th minute on the second Gomez goal of the game. United took advantage of a San Jose turnover near midfield, and Moreno took the ball and penetrated into the Quakes defense. Just before the top of the 18-yard box, Moreno dished off to an open on-rushing Gomez in the middle of the area and he was able to calmly place a shot around Onstad for the 3-0 advantage.

Last Match vs. Rapids
Earthquakes 1, Rapids 0; Wednesday, June 29, 2005; Spartan Stadium; San Jose, Calif.

The San Jose Earthquakes used a late Dwayne De Rosario goal to pull out a 1-0 victory over the Colorado Rapids to win their third straight game at Spartan Stadium. Earthquakes goalkeeper Pat Onstad recorded his seventh shutout of the season and fifth consecutive one at home. The Quakes had a strong build-up late in the first half that nearly led to a goal. Ronald Cerritos found Brian Mullan on the right wing and he laid a pass back to Kelly Gray. Gray quickly found De Rosario in the penalty box, where the midfielder touched a pass back to Gray. Gray then one-timed a blast that went just past the far post. Two minutes into the second half, Ricardo Clark nearly got the Quakes on the board when he sprinted with the ball deep into the penalty area on the right side. Clark beat his defender and headed toward the goal before rocketing a shot from close range that beat Joe Cannon but bounced off the goalpost. The Rapids had a prime opportunity to score in the 75th minute. Nat Borchers moved the ball up the right sideline and slipped a pass into the middle of the field, where an open Luchi Gonzalez ran onto it near the top of the 18-yard box. His one-time shot was gobbled up by yet another diving Onstad save. The Quakes broke the deadlock and got on the board in the 88th minute on a Dwayne De Rosario goal. Mullan moved the ball up the right sideline and then hit second half substitute Julian Nash with a pass near the top right corner of the penalty box. Nash turned and touched the ball back to a cutting Mullan, who then sliced a perfect pass into the area to De Rosario, who ran onto the ball and fired a low shot into the right corner of the goal past Cannon to give the Quakes a 1-0 lead.

Last Match vs. MetroStars
Earthquakes 1, MetroStars 0; Saturday, May 7, 2005; Giants Stadium; East Rutherford, NJ

The San Jose Earthquakes shut out the MetroStars 1-0 at Giants Stadium to stretch their unbeaten streak to three games. Ronald Cerritos scored his third goal of the season and Pat Onstad made five saves for the shutout. Brad Davis notched his league-leading sixth assist in six games this season. The MetroStars had their best chance in the opening 15 minutes of the match as Amado Guevara found a gap in the Quakes defense. Guevara received a pass and dribbled to the top of the penalty box before ripping a long-range shot off the near post. San Jose was then able to clear the ball out of danger. Sergio Galvan Rey flicked a header off the crossbar at the 30-minute mark of the first half off a corner kick from Guevara. Guevara whipped a cross in to the near post that Galvan Rey flicked to the back post, but the ball skimmed off the crossbar. Brian Ching almost broke the deadlock in the 35th minute after turning on his defender in the box. Wade Barrett played a give-and-go with Cerritos and then found Ching inside the box, 15 yards from the goal. Ching turned to his left and got free from his defender before shooting to the far post, but MetroStars goalkeeper Zach Wells got a piece of the shot and tipped it wide. The Quakes came out attacking in the second half and were finally rewarded in the 60th minute with a goal by Cerritos. De Rosario took the ball down the left wing and slipped a pass between two defenders to Brad Davis, who turned and swung a cross to the back post for Cerritos. Cerritos got free from his defender and headed the ball into the corner past Wells for the eventual game-winning goal. The Quakes then limited the MetroStars chances over the last 30 minutes to earn their first shutout of the 2005 season.

Earthquakes To Face Spanish First Division Club

The San Jose Earthquakes announced that the club will host Spanish First Division club Deportivo Alavés in an international exhibition match on Monday, August 8 at 7:30 p.m. PT at Spartan Stadium. The first ever match-up between the Quakes and a Spanish First Division opponent will serve as bonus game "A" for Earthquakes season ticket holders. A finalist in the 2001 UEFA Cup, Alavés cruised to the championship game led by Jordi Cruyff, where they dropped a memorable 5-4 decision to Liverpool FC. Based in the Basque capital of Vitoria, Deportivo Alavés was relegated to the Spanish Second Division in 2003, before earning promotion back to the First Division last month. A proud team that boasts ten years in the Spanish First Division, the 84-year old club made a triumphant return to the top league in 1995, eventually leading to the successful run to the UEFA Cup Final in 2001. The Earthquakes have a 13-13-5 all-time record against professional international opponents since 1996, including the CONCACAF Champions Cup, the preseason La Manga Cup and friendly matches.

Tight Games

San Jose has played tight games all season, as 15 of their 18 games have either been decided by one goal or ended in ties. Also, 11 of the 18 games that the Quakes have played in 2005 have entered the halftime break with the teams tied.

Unbeaten At Home
The Quakes currently have a 10-game unbeaten streak at Spartan Stadium as they have not lost since Sept. 8, 2004 in their home stadium. The 10-game streak is the third longest in team history. The club has two 15-game unbeaten streaks at Spartan (8/21/99 - 7/4/00 and 8/25/01 - 9/7/02). The team has posted a 4-0-6 record at Spartan during the streak.

Quakes Stingy At Spartan
Earthquakes' opponents have not scored at Spartan Stadium since April 23, 2005 when Kansas City's Chris Klein found the net in the 34th minute of the Wizards' 3-2 loss to the Quakes. The visitors' scoreless streak at Spartan now stands at a club-record 506 minutes. The previous record was 396 minutes, which was set from July 24 - Sept. 8 of 2004. The Quakes have earned shutouts in five straight matches at home, setting a new club record. The Quakes maintain Dombrowski's rights and have the option of recalling him at any point during the 2005 MLS season. Dombrowski, 23, has been a member of the Earthquakes for the 2004 and 2005 seasons. The West Allis, Wisconsin native made four appearances for the San Jose club last season, but has yet to play in a 2005 MLS regular season match. However, Dombrowski did start and play in six of the Quakes reserve league games this year, notching one assist in 525 minutes of play. The 2004 MLS SuperDraft fifth-round pick starred at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee for four years, scoring 16 goals in his college career.

Davis Earns First Cap

San Jose Earthquakes midfielder Brad Davis earned his first cap for the United States on Thursday, July 7 as he started and played 76 minutes for the U.S. in a 4-1 win over Cuba in the team's first match of the CONCACAF Gold Cup. Davis has not appeared in the team's three other games in the tournament. The U.S. has reached the semifinals of the Gold Cup and play Honduras on Thursday, July 21 at Giants Stadium at 3:00 p.m. The 2005 Gold Cup Final will also be played at Giants Stadium, with kickoff scheduled for July 24 at 3 p.m. ET. Davis will rejoin the Quakes at the conclusion of the Americans run in the tournament.

De Rosario Rejoins Quakes
Earthquakes midfielder Dwayne De Rosario started and played 90 minutes in three matches for Canada at the CONCACAF Gold Cup. Canada fell 1-0 in the opening match on July 7 to Costa Rica and then lost 2-0 to the United States on July 9, before winning its final game 2-1 against Cuba on July 12. De Rosario wore the captain's armband for the Canadians against the U.S. The Canadians, however, were eliminated after finishing third in the group. The Scarborough, Ontario native then flew straight to Washington, D.C. for the Quakes match against D.C. United. He played 90 minutes in the team's 3-0 loss. The MLS 2004 Goal of the Year winner has scored seven goals for Canada in his 32 appearances since 1998.

Road Stretch Nearing End
The Quakes have one game remaining of a four-game road stretch as they take on the Colorado Rapids on Wednesday, July 20 at Invesco Field at Mile High. Through the first three games of the trip, San Jose has posted a 1-1-1 record. After the game versus the Rapids, San Jose will enjoy some home cooking. First, the team will play the MetroStars on Saturday, July 23 at Spartan Stadium and then San Jose will play three out of four games at home in the month of August.

Shutting Them Down Late
Early in 2005, the Quakes were allowing goals late in the game as two of their first three matches saw the Quakes surrender late goals in the final 15 minutes. However, since a May 21 loss to Los Angeles, the Quakes have not allowed a goal in the last 15 minutes of any game, a stretch of 10 straight games.

Hot in July
Ronald Cerritos has scored 14 goals and registered 10 assists in July. Brad Davis' highest scoring month is July, with four goals and two assists.
