Wizards can wrap up #1 seed in West with win at San Jose on October 9
The Kansas City Wizards will play their final road game of the regular season this weekend when they face the San Jose Earthquakes at Spartan Stadium on Oct. 9. The match will kickoff at 9 p.m. CT and will be broadcast live on Metro Sports. Kansas City needs only a win on Saturday to lock up the #1 seed in the West and clinch home field advantage throughout the playoffs.

San Jose will be without three of their top players due to national team duty. Forward Landon Donovan will be with the U.S. national team, while goalkeeper Pat Onstad and forward Dewayne DeRosario will both be with the Canadian national team for their upcoming World Cup Qualifying matches. Kansas City will be missing midfielder Kerry Zavagnin and forward Josh Wolff who will join Donovan with the U.S. team.

Despite the missing personnel, the defending MLS Cup Champions Earthquakes will be fighting for the final playoff spot in the West, needing a win combined with a Dallas loss (at LA) to clinch a berth in the postseason. The 'Quakes are winless in their last five matches, posting three consecutive losses followed by two ties. Their last win came in a 1-0 decision at New England on Sept. 4. Their last win at home came back on Aug. 21 in a 3-0 shutout of the Dallas Burn.

Kansas City takes one of the league's best road records into Spartan Stadium on Saturday, having posted a 5-6-3 record (18 points) away from Arrowhead this season. The Wizards five road victories so far this year are the most since 2000 when the team went 5-3-8 on the road.

Wizards playoff scenario
The Wizards have already clinched a berth in the postseason, but there is still a lot to play for in the final two weeks of the season, including the #1 seed in the West and the Supporters Shield. If the Wizards win at San Jose this weekend or Los Angeles ties or loses to Dallas, Kansas City would secure the top seed in the Western Conference and home field advantage throughout the playoffs. The Wizards playoff scenario for clinching the #1 seed in the West is as follows:

Kansas City Wizards clinch No. 1 seed in Western Conference with:

(a) win vs. San Jose Earthquakes
(b) Los Angeles Galaxy loss or tie vs. Dallas Burn
