Last Match

Earthquakes 3, Chivas USA 0; Saturday, September 10, 2005; Spartan Stadium; San Jose, Calif.
The San Jose Earthquakes exploded for three goals in the second half as the first place Quakes downed Chivas USA 3-0 before an electric crowd of 22,311 at Spartan Stadium. Dwayne De Rosario assisted on two goals and Pat Onstad earned his second straight shutout, establishing a new Quakes record for shutouts in a season with 10. The 3-0 win extended the Earthquakes home-unbeaten streak to 15 games, tying a club record. The Quakes had an early opportunity to score in the 12th minute when Mark Chung blasted a free kick from the left corner of the 18 yard box toward the top left corner of the goal, but Chivas USA goalkeeper Sergio Garcia was able to jump and punch the ball away. Danny Califf had a huge save in the 20th minute when he booted away a dangerous Chivas USA cross from the right side from a waiting Thiago Martins. San Jose came out of the halftime break and took the lead 1-0 in the 47th minute on Mark Chung's sixth goal of the season. De Rosario won a ball near midfield and dribbled up field before dropping a pass off to his left to Chung on the wing. Chung settled the ball before firing a low shot towards goal that a sliding Douglas Sequeira attempted to block. The ball hit his leg and continued toward the goal, popping over the Chivas USA goalkeeper Garcia for the 1-0 lead. The Earthquakes took a 2-0 lead in the 74th minute on a brilliant strike by Clark. Chung sent a pass to De Rosario on the Chivas USA end of the field, and De Rosario slid it through to Clark. Clark took off from midfield and penetrated the Chivas USA defense, beating defenders and dribbling to the top of the 18-yard box before attempting to slip a pass into the box. The ball bounced off a defender directly back to Clark, who settled the ball and launched a shot past the sprawling goalkeeper and into the corner. San Jose extended their lead to 3-0 on Ching's first goal since April 30, 2005. Chung hit De Rosario with the ball near the top of the Chivas USA 18-yard box and then passed the ball on to Ching in the middle of the area, who settled the ball before placing an open shot past Chivas USA goalkeeper Brad Guzan for the final 3-0 tally.
