The MetroStars are proud to announce a partnership with Verizon Wireless that sent four youth soccer teams to MLS Futbolito, Major League Soccer's official nationwide amateur soccer tournament.
Futbolito New York was held on Saturday, August 20 at Flushing Meadows Park in Queens. Verizon Wireless sponsored New York Magic and Super Magic, two boys teams under 14 from Flushing. Futbolito New Jersey was held on Saturday, August 27 at Brookdale Park in Montclair. Verizon Wireless sponsored two teams from Kearny, Thistle FC, an under 17 boys team and the Thistle FC, an under 10 boys team.
Participating players and families will enjoy a festive day filled with music, food, giveaways, MetroStars player appearances and international soccer icon Carlos Valderrama. Each participant in Futbolito received a FREE ticket to a MetroStars game, an authentic MLS Futbolito t-shirt and a chance to win prizes from Panasonic and/or RadioShack.
MLS Futbolito is a 4v4 soccer tournament and grassroots program that caters to the league' growing multicultural fan base. The daylong tournament is played on small-sided fields without goalkeepers. Team rosters can consist of up to seven players and each team will play a minimum of three games in round-robin action.
Futbolito consists of three divisions - Premier Adult, Adult Recreational - Male / Female, and Youth - Boy / Girls. First and second place winners of each division will receive medals and teams competing in the Premier Division will have a chance to win $2,000 for first place and $1000 for second place.
