NEW YORK - The North American soccer community raised over $135,000 for the U.S. Soccer Foundation Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund through an online auction of game-worn, autographed jerseys of Major League Soccer players, as well as members of the U.S. National Team and Mexican National Team. The week-long auction held on MLSnet.com, which ended on Monday, September 12, included over 100 jerseys from all 12 MLS teams that participated in games on September 3 and 4 and members of the United States and Mexico National Teams that faced each other in the FIFA World Cup Qualifier on Sept. 3 in Columbus, Ohio.
U.S. National Team defender Oguchi Onyewu's jersey raised the most of any player, claiming a winning bid of $6260. U.S. National team forward Landon Donovan and goalkeeper Kasey Keller attracted the next highest winning bids with both of their jersey's selling for $6010. New England Revolution goalkeeper Matt Reis's jersey from his game against Real Salt Lake led all MLS players with a winning bid of $3530. The jerseys worn by RSL forward Jason Kreis ($3160) and D.C. United forward Freddy Adu ($2910) in his game against the Colorado Rapids were next among MLS stars. From the Mexican National team, forward Jared Borgetti's jersey brought in $1,625, followed by goalkeeper Oswaldo Sanchez ($1,042) and defender Rafael Marquez ($1,020).
More than 40 jerseys received winning bids of $1000 or more with the average jersey selling for over $1200. Fans from the United States, Mexico, Great Britain and Japan participated in the auction.
The auction was fully supported by Major League Soccer, the U.S. Soccer Federation, Federación Mexicana de Fútbol, the MLS Players Union and the U.S. National Soccer Team Players Association. In addition, the U.S. Soccer Foundation and Eurosport contributed support to the relief efforts.
