Buddle knocked home a Simon Elliott pass after a poor giveaway in the back for the Crew's first (38), then he coolly chipped Dallas 'keeper Jeff Cassar after Elliott laced a perfect ball in behind the defense from the flank.

The Burn equalized on 59 minutes when Jason Kreis scored his fifth goal of the campaign, a shot-cum-cross from Eddie Johnson finding Chris Gbandi, whose low drive was then deflected home from close range by the all-time MLS goalscoring leader.

Crew coach Greg Andrulis made just one change to the team that played to a scoreless draw with the Colorado Rapids the previous weekend, Chris Wingert returning to the starting lineup as Jeff Cunningham was reduced to a substitute role, the Crew head man also going with just one out-and-out striker.

Crew coach Greg Andrulis said 17-year-old Danny Szetela will remain with the club - at least through the remainder of the 2004 season. Szetela had been the subject of rampant trade rumors that saw him go to MetroStars, closer to his New Jersey home. "I think everyone is relieved that they know where he is going to be the rest of the season," Andrulis said.

After Cunningham had contributed just one goal in his last three games, Andrulis went with Buddle as the lone front-runner, with Kyle Martino and Manny Lagos in deep-lying attacking roles playing off him.

"Edson has proved throughout his career that he is a good player," Andrulis said. "Edson stepped up to the plate big time in response to a subpar performance on Saturday night. He knew it and wanted to go out and make a stamp on the game and he did."

The decision not to start Cunningham was also caused by an injury concern. "He's a tough cookie," Andrulis said. "The last couple of weeks he's been playing essentially with a pulled hamstring. We felt he needed some rest and we talked about it before the game whether or not to have him available."
