Roundup: RSL drops first game

Ellinger made 10 changes at the half -- couldn't keep things close and United potted four goals in the second frame. Eliseo Quintanilla hit for two goals in the second half, and rookies Matt Nickell and Nick Van Sicklen added a goal apiece.

RSL fourth-round SuperDraft pick Luke Kreamalmayer provided his club with its only goal of the match -- and, unofficially, the club's first-ever goal -- to prevent the shutout.

MetroStars, FC Dallas draw: In the first preseason scrimmage of the year for both teams, the MetroStars and FC Dallas played to a 1-1 draw in Bradenton, Fla. Wednesday. The match, which was the first friendly the Dallas club has played under its new moniker, consisted of two 35-minute halves.

Former top SuperDraft pick Chris Gbandi notched the opener for Dallas late in the first half off of a corner kick sent in by recently acquired midfielder Arturo Alvarez, but Metros forward Eamon Zayed scored the equalizer midway through the second stanza.

Crew top South Florida: The Columbus Crew won for the second time this preseason, defeating the University of South Florida 1-0 on Tuesday in Bradenton, Fla. Rookie forward Knox Cameron tallied the only goal of the match, with the assist going to fellow rookie Domenic Mediate.

The Crew take the field again on Friday at the IMG Academy in Bradenton for an 11 a.m. ET friendly against the MetroStars.

Leitch laid up: MetroStars defender Chris Leitch will be out for an undetermined amount of time after undergoing surgery for a "sports hernia" Tuesday in Munich, Germany. Dr. Ulrike Muschaweck performed the operation, a procedure called the Minimal Repair Technique that he developed.

The 25-year-old Leitch had complained of discomfort in preseason workouts, and he will now return to New Jersey to rehab on his own before joining the Metros on their trip to Ecuador later in the month.

Crew waive Denton: Columbus Crew defender Eric Denton will depart the club after being waived Tuesday. The five-year MLS veteran spent the past three years with the Crew, appearing in 67 games and registering 13 points on three goals and seven assists. Denton played in 18 matches last season.
