albeit an indirect opportunity -- didn't come until the 84th minute. Revs midfielder James Riley took a shot just inside the left side of the penalty area and the ball hit Chivas defender Ezra Hendrickson's outstretched hand. Referee Alex Prus, however, didn't award the Revolution a penalty kick.
"It was a scandalous decision by the referee," said Nicol.
Twellman had limited looks at goal and when he did get the ball in the Chivas third of the field, it was usually with two or three defenders around him ready to dispossess him.
"I only had a couple of shots and the one I hit over was just a half chance," said Twellman. "I just hit it wildly."
Revs personnel issues were not entirely to blame for the lackluster offensive performance.
"We've been missing (Noonan, Ralston and Dempsey) all month so it didn't really matter tonight," said Twellman. "We're sick of talking about who we are missing. We just have to take care of business and in the second half we outplayed them but we just didn't come out ahead."
The problems the Revolution had against Chivas turned into frustration late in the game as three Revs players were shown yellow cards for rough challenges in the final 10 minutes of play.
The worst of the physical play was the work of Joe Franchino, who clattered into Chivas USA's Hector Cuadros as the two jumped for a header. The challenge left Cuadros, who was taken away in an ambulance after the match, with a grade two concussion.
"It's a hard challenge and he got the worst end of it," said Franchino. "It's a competitive game, I went at it hard and, unfortunately for him, he didn't get up. I hope he's all right."
With the loss, the Revolution failed to overtake Eastern Conference leaders Chicago Fire in the table, still one point shy of the pace setters, as they prepare for a midweek match against the Los Angeles Galaxy at Gillette Stadium.
