Revs' Dempsey earns weekly honor

Clint Dempsey scored one goal and helped created another Saturday night.

NEW YORK - New England Revolution midfielder Clint Dempsey was selected as the Honda MLS Player of the Week by the Professional Soccer Reporters Association (PSRA) for Week 4. Dempsey set up his team's first goal and scored a spectacular one of his own, giving the visiting Revolution a 4-3 victory over D.C. United on Saturday, April 23 at RFK Stadium. The award is the first for the reigning 2004 Gatorade MLS Rookie of the Year.

A perfectly placed ball from Dempsey from the right flank to forward Taylor Twellman helped open the scoring in the 26th minute. Twellman turned and tucked a low shot into the left corner of the goal past an outstretched Nick Rimando for his second goal of the season. It was Dempsey's second assist of the campaign.

In the 77th minute with the score 3-2 in favor of the Revs, Dempsey scored his second goal of the season to seal the win. Revolution midfielder Andy Dorman swung in a free kick from the right side into the area, which Dempsey met with a diving header into the corner of the goal.

"We would have been disappointed if we didn't get three points," Dempsey told the Boston Globe after the game. "But we showed our character and got the win. We opened the door and let them in the game, because at the end of the first half, they were out of hope. But you never know what is in the cards in soccer."

The Honda Major League Soccer Player of the Week is selected every week throughout the MLS regular season by a panel of journalists from the Professional Soccer Reporters Association (PSRA).
