Real Salt Lake ties Portimonense 1-1

SALT LAKE CITY - Real Salt Lake, Major League Soccer's 12th team, continued its inaugural preseason training with a 1-1 draw today against Portimonense, a Portuguese Second Division team, on a 30-yard free kick strike from FW Jason Kreis in the 14th minute. RSL's next and final game during the Iberian peninsular portion of preseason will be on Tuesday, March 8, against Recreativa Huelva, who currently sit No. 2 in the Spanish Second Division.

"Training has been great here in Portugal, the atmosphere amongst our players is very good," said Head Coach John Ellinger. "I couldn't ask for more from our players. Everybody is leaving it all out there on the field because they want to be on the roster when we play our first-ever game that matters on April 2 in New York against the MetroStars."
Today's RSL lineup was as follows:
GK - Nolly (Countess 46); DF - Behncke, Akwari, Knowles (Halilovic 46), Pierce; MF - Whitfield (Selolwane 46), Kamler, O'Brien, Jackson (Kreamalmeyer 46); FW - Kreis, Watson (Cila 46)
Real Salt Lake's only goal came off a low, sizzling free kick taken by Kreis, Major League Soccer's All-Time leading scorer, who curled the shot around the wall from 30 yards out, putting RSL up 1-0 just 14 minutes into the game. Two minutes later, Portimonense equalized with a free kick of its own from just outside the box past RSL 'keeper Jay Nolly. Each team shared possession and attacking opportunity for the remainder of the half but were unable to again find the back of the net. The teams continued in the second half with the up-tempo pace they had set in the first half. Portimonense played at a high level and took a lot of risks going forward but were unable to capitalize on its efforts. RSL injected its own high level of play, staunchly dissolving the Portimonense attack and ending the game in a 1-1 draw.
