Rapids 2, Wizards 1 -- quote sheet

MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER QUOTE SHEET
MONDAY, JULY 4, 2005

COLORADO RAPIDS HEAD COACH FERNANDO CLAVIJO

On the game:
"I have said all along that I am extremely proud of the way we turned around in the second half."

On the Rapids' success playing down men:
"We don't react until we are provoked or we are scored against or we are given a red card that puts us against the wall. I think we need to react before some of these punches."

On second half substitutions:
"I want to win, I want to go for the points. So I came out with three defenders and four midfielders. With having three defenders the midfield has to have two defenders, and that is what I did with Leo (Cullen) and Kyle (Beckerman) and allowing (Alain) Nkong to get on top of that and with Jeff (Cunningham) to combine. I put (Terry) Cooke outside because he plays out there and he is good on set pieces. The subs worked but we if we didn't come out with these types of sacrifices we would not have won."

COLORADO RAPIDS MIDFIELDER TERRY COOKE

On his goal:
"It looked like there was a deflection off the wall but I'm not going to complain; I like anything as long as it hits the back of the net."

KANSAS CITY WIZARDS HEAD COACH BOB GANSLER

On the game:
"We talked about playing two good halves and we asked them to go out and play like the way we usually do in the second half right off the bat. I think we did that and got an early goal and got some opportunities, but then we allowed them to get into the game too much and specifically there were too many restarts; we gave them too many corners and too many free kicks. With time they are going to utilize those. We talked about [it] at halftime and we said 'One goal won't do it, so let's start out again and get that second goal, and then we can utilize the ball and make them chase.'"

KANSAS CITY WIZARDS MIDFIELDER CHRIS KLEIN

On the team's strech of down play:
"We had a 1-0 lead at halftime and we [were] a man up and talked about coming out and dictating the pace of the game. And when we came out in the second half they dictated the pace of the game, and when that happens they are going to get goals. Whether or not it's two restarts it doesn't really matter. Those goals weren't an accident. They took it to us at the beginning of the second half being a man down and we can't let that happen."
