Preki: Ready ... and waiting

the only goal the U.S. scored -- has played in both of the Wizards reserve matches this season, logging 135 of a possible 180 minutes.

His performances, according to Gansler, have not been enough to warrant time with the full squad.

"He's playing along. But he's not dominating these reserve matches," he said.

"Preki has not played in almost a year-and-a-half in meaningful situations. It is difficult. If this were last year where we had scored one goal after three games, then you'd say we need to do something and maybe that's the solution," Gansler said. "We're averaging over two a game, so it's not on that side we need to address things. End of story."

The Wizards have driven home seven goals in their first three MLS matches this season but, as Gansler has said, have not kept possession of the ball as much as they would like. Preki believes he can be part of the solution.

"Even though the team has done well, one thing we can improve is possession of the ball," said Preki. "The last few games we've had the lead and squandered the lead. We've played a lot of defense.

"That's my quality. I can go in there and possess the ball and control the tempo of the game," the Yugoslavian native said. "My skills are still there; they haven't disappeared."

The team's fortunes are at the fore of Preki's mind -- he simply desires to contribute.

"The team has done well; I have no argument there. Why should I want my team to struggle so I can get my spot back? That's not fun either," he said.

"It's just weird. I left the scene as MVP of the league; it's not like I was the 22nd guy on the roster. It's disappointing for me. I got injured when I was on top of my game. If I was given a chance, I could have a say in his thinking."

It is not clear if Preki will dress Saturday for the Wizards match against D.C. United, a match the Wizards could use as a springboard to make an early move in the Eastern Conference as four of their next six matches are at home where the Wizards are 1-0 this season and were 9-3-3 last season.

But if he is not, he will continue to support his side and wait for his chance.

"I've never been a quitter in my life, and I'm not going to quit now," he said.
