On Wednesday, Earthquakes midfielder Brian Mullan participated in the Oakland Athletics' fourth annual Mug Root Beer Float Day at the Network Associates Coliseum before the A's took on the Seattle Mariners.
The event, which lasted from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. PT, featured local sports celebrities and television stars at different tables throughout the Coliseum's East Side Club with root beer and ice cream. Fans could purchase a plastic mug for two dollars and could then choose a "celebrity scooper" to make their root beer float.
Mullan was a favorite at Mug Root Beer Float Day, especially for Earthquakes fans at the event who were able to interact with their soccer hero one on one. The Quakes player not only scooped ice cream and poured soda, but also signed numerous pictures, T-shirts and root beer float mugs for fans of all ages. The mini-soccer balls and Earthquakes logo pins on the table were also in high demand, which fans purchased by making donations to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
One fan at the event was excited to see the Earthquakes represented at the Coliseum because they are the Bay Area's only recent professional sports champion. Children also took to Mullan, who graciously chatted with every girl and boy that stopped by. One young girl named Vanessa returned to visit Mullan three times, while another young fan named Connor joked around the Earthquakes star. Mullan also visited with some kids who suffer from diabetes.
All proceeds from the event benefited JDRF in their quest to find a cure for diabetes in children. By the end of the A's game, Mug Root Beer Float Day had raised over $50,000 for the organization.
