MLS postpones Trofeo Santiago Bernabeu trip

Major League Soccer Deputy Commissioner and Soccer United Marketing International President Ivan Gazidis issued the following statement Wednesday regarding the postponement of the league's previously announced participation in Real Madrid's prestigious Trofeo Santiago Bernabeu tournament:

"Unfortunately for Major League Soccer and Real Madrid, La Liga recently rescheduled certain games, making the original Sept. 22 date for the Trofeo Santiago Bernabeu impossible," said Gazidis. "In order not to place an undue burden on our U.S. and international players as they prepare for an important World Cup qualifying games on Sept. 4 and 8, we have decided that we cannot participate on the alternate date of Aug. 31. We keep the possibility open for future years."
