Wolff hit for the only goal two minutes before the halftime break when he potted the rebound of a Jose Burciaga Jr. shot that Metro goalkeeper Jonny Walker could only parry to give the Wizards just their second victory in their last seven matches while extending the MetroStars winless run to four games.
"We haven't been sharp enough with our finishing, decision-making and when to pass," MetroStars coach Bob Bradley said. "I think we've created some advantages in these games and it's certainly frustrating that we're not able to capitalize on these advantages."
Despite having Jonny Walker and Eddie Gaven released from national team duty so they could play in the Wizards match, Bradley still made five changes to the team that played to a 1-1 draw at home with the Columbus Crew the previous weekend.
Eddie Pope was still with the U.S. national team, meaning Kenny Arena returned to start in central defense. With Joselito Vaca injured, Mike Magee suspended and Amado Guevara with Honduras, Bradley made three changes in midfield, bringing in Tim Regan, Ricardo Clark and Pablo Brenes. Cornell Glen was also away with the Trinidad & Tobago national team, meaning a start for Sergio Galvan Rey.

The New England Revolution saw their winless streak extended to four matches, shutout for the second consecutive match in a 1-0 loss at home to the San Jose Earthquakes. The loss kept the Revolution in the Eastern Conference basement, with 27 points from 24 matches, now three behind fourth-place D.C. United and heading into the weekend 13 points out of first place.
Despite missing four regulars through international duty, the Earthquakes won for the fifth time in eight matches to move out of last place in the West while condemning the Revolution to the non-playoff paying place in the East.
Reserve Chris Brown, making his first appearance in eight league matches, hit for the only goal of the match three minutes after the halftime break as he stepped in for the first-choice strike partnership of Landon Donovan and Brian Ching -- both of whom hit home for the USA in their 2-0 World Cup qualifier victory against El Salvador immediately preceding the Revs-Quakes match. Ian Russell put an early cross from the right, Brown slipping in to head home unchallenged past Rev 'keeper Matt Reis.
"I'm completely disappointed. If you don't score goals, you can't win games. We proved that tonight," Revolution boss Steve Nicol said. "It doesn't concern me who they have on the team. It's immaterial. Whenever we play, we have to make chances and put them away.
For the second consecutive weekend New England striker Taylor Twellman saw his poor run of luck continue, late heroics again denied by the woodwork as his 81st-minute header came back off the left post.
"Taylor just has to keep getting in position to score," Nicol said. "We have a lot of guys who are struggling and that makes them anxious when they get in front of the net. We just need one to open the floodgates."
Nicol made two changes to the team that he started in the scoreless draw against D.C. United the previous weekend. Avery John returned to central defense and Brian Kamler came back in on the left side of midfield, Richie Baker and Jose Cancela returning to the substitutes bench.
