MetroStars acquire veteran midfielder Chris Henderson

SECAUCUS, N.J. - The MetroStars announced today that they have acquired veteran midfielder Chris Henderson from the Columbus Crew in exchange for second-year defender Tim Ward. Henderson- who will be entering his 11th season in Major League Soccer- ranks first all time in MLS history for games played, having seen action in 285 contests.

"This move makes us a better team," said MetroStars President and General Manager Alexi Lalas. "Chris Henderson is a man who wanted to come to the MetroStars and we're excited to add a winger of his caliber. We expect him to provide consistent service, something that has been missing from our team."

The 35-year old midfielder ranks seventh all-time in league history in assists with 79, while also adding 48 career goals. In addition to the Crew, Henderson has played with the Kansas City Wizards, the Colorado Rapids, and the Miami Fusion.

"We are thrilled to get a player in Chris who has been very consistent throughout his career," said MetroStars Head Coach Mo Johnston. "He is the ultimate professional with tons of experience. He has worked very hard over the course of his career and is very versatile because he can play on either the left or the right. He is a great addition to our club."

"I have always liked red-heads, so it will be nice to play for two in Mo and Alexi," said Henderson. "But seriously, I played with Mo in Kansas City and we won a championship together so I know what he is like. I am just really happy to play for an organization that is focused on winning championships. It's going to be a great situation for my family and I. I am very excited about playing in one of the greatest cities in the world."

The Everett, Washington native also ranks eighth all-time in game-winning assists (21), and second all-time in games started with 275. Henderson has 29 MLS playoff appearances and registered four goals and five assists in those games.

Henderson also has years of U.S. National Team experience, having appeared 79 times for the U.S., with 63 starts. He has three goals and 10 assists for the national team, and was the youngest player- at 19- on the 1990 U.S. World Cup team.

Ward appeared in 13 games in 2005 for the MetroStars after being selected by the "Red and Black" with the 12th overall selection in the 2005 MLS SuperDraft. He started 11 of those contests, tallying three assists.
