CARSON, CA - The Los Angeles Galaxy acquired a portion of an allocation from the San Jose Earthquakes and in return sent defender Danny Califf to the Earthquakes, the club announced today. In other moves, the Galaxy completed an earlier transaction by acquiring a portion of an allocation and a youth international spot from FC Dallas. In exchange, the club traded their partial allocation, which was received in an earlier trade from CD Chivas USA, to Dallas.
"On behalf of the Galaxy, I would like to thank Danny for all of his contributions to our club over the last five seasons. We wish Danny, his wife Erin and their daughter Paige all the best," said L.A. Galaxy President and General Manager Doug Hamilton. "Let's be very clear, we are disappointed to be trading Danny. However, based on his desire to play abroad, coupled with his contract expiring in nine months, we decided, as part of our long term plans, to make a move now that would ensure us of receiving the greatest value in return."
Califf is currently recovering from surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee. A 24-year-old defender, he is looking to overcome an injury-plagued campaign in '04, playing a career-low of just 13 games, ten of those as a starter. In his five-year career, the native of Orange, California has played in 103 games - made 95 starts - and amassed five goals and four assists.
A consistent performer who has also made several appearances for the U.S. national team since the conclusion of FIFA World Cup Korea/Japan 2002, Califf was a pivotal member of the Galaxy sides that captured MLS Cup 2002 and the 2001 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.
The Los Angeles Galaxy are pleased to once again offer fans "The Best Seats in the House" at The Home Depot Center. For the Galaxy's first two home games in 2005 (April 9 vs. Real Salt Lake and April 23 vs. CD Chivas USA), the club will be selling 100 seats along one touchline on a first-come, first-served basis. Each ticket costs $150 per game and includes the actual chair the fan sits in.
