Galaxy 2, Wizards 2 -- quote sheet

MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER QUOTE SHEET
SATURDAY, JULY 24, 2004 - LOS ANGELES GALAXY 2, KANSAS CITY WIZARDS 2

KANSAS CITY WIZARDS HEAD COACH BOB GANSLER

On the game:
"We played livelier in the second half, but on the whole we didn't play well enough to win tonight because it is a 90-minute game and there were too many lulls. The first half we didn't put our foot on the accelerator and really play the way we like to play forward. The second half, for a while we had it going and we let them back in the game. It was not only a goal in add-on time, but the first one right after we scored two. All in all, we didn't play well enough to win. We need to win at home. It is tried and true and everybody should know that half a loaf is not good enough."

KANSAS CITY WIZARDS GOALKEEPER TONY MEOLA

On the game:
"We blew it. We were up 2-0 at home and played the last three corner kicks like we were in preseason. We were scrambling the whole time. If we are going to win a championship, we can't allow that to happen. It was (a lack of) concentration; we left a guy open. On a corner kick you can't allow guys to run through the box. We don't clear the ball, we put it right back to the best left-footed crosser in the league, he whips a ball in and Tyrone Marshall runs in free. But, we got a game Wednesday and that is one of the games we have in hand on L.A. and we have to take care of business."

LOS ANGELES GALAXY HEAD COACH SIGI SCHMID

On the match:
"I thought we created the better opportunities all night. (Tony) Meola came up with a couple of great saves and we hit the crossbar a couple times. We had one of our best offensive performances of the season; I'm proud of the fight we displayed."

On the character of the club:
"We showed some character tonight. We were the better team the majority of the game. We had a three-minute blackout where we allowed the goals - but for the other 87 minutes plus, we were the better team."

LOS ANGELES GALAXY DEFENDER TYRONE MARSHALL

On the team's character:
"We showed some character coming back. We went down 2-0 because they got two goals on us against the run of play. But we dug deeper, we fought and we got the goals we needed."

On the rivalry:
"We had a bitter taste in our mouths after they came to our place and won. I was sitting on the sideline during that game and I was frustrated. Coming out here tonight, I knew I didn't want to have that bad taste in my mouth again."

On the importance of the match:
"We needed that result, especially on the road. If we won (or tied), we stayed in first, if we lost we'd be in second at the All-Star break."

LOS ANGELES GALAXY MIDFIELDER ANDREAS HERZOG

On the match:
"It was a very emotional match. It was one of out best games of the season. We played very well and we had a lot of great chances. In the end, we had a bit of luck and scored in the final minute to get the result we deserved."

On the comeback:
"I thought that after falling behind 2-0 that we would have to open up our defense, knowing that they have very strong and fast forwards. However, in the end, we did well and we equalized and that is all that matters."
