Eighty-eight is great for Kreis in draw

Jason Kreis's goal Saturday night was assisted by Oscar Pareja.

who on Saturday equaled the mark for the most appearances in a Rapids uniform -- pulled the home side level just two minutes later.

The Rapids enjoyed the better play in the first half, using long diagonal balls to create quality chances on the break down the flanks. Colorado's attackers tested the Dallas defense several times in the opening stanza, including forcing an early save from goalkeeper Jeff Cassar after Seth Trembly latched onto a well-played square ball in the penalty area, lashing a short-range shot on net. But Cassar dove low to his right, sweeping his arm to deflect the ball wide.

Kreis then recorded his 88th career MLS goal in the 49th minute of play, chipping the ball over an exposed Joe Cannon for the lead. Veteran midfielder Oscar Pareja slipped the ball into the penalty area from the top of the restraining arc to the feet of Kreis, who wheeled around defender Matt Crawford and beat Cannon inside the far post. The tally tied Kreis with Roy Lassiter for the lead on the all-time MLS goalscoring chart.

Two minutes later, Henderson equalized with an opportunistic goal from inside the box. Forward Rey Angel Martinez chased the ball down deep in the corner, swinging a dangerous cross in front of the net that forced Cassar to punch the ball clear. The clearance fell to the feet of a wide-open Henderson, who coolly slotted the ball past the stranded goalkeeper to knot the score.

Henderson made his 151st appearance with the Rapids, tying Marcelo Balboa for the team's all-time team record. Martinez, who has been training with the team since April, became the first Cuban player to start an MLS game. The 24-year-old Martinez made headlines in February 2002 when he and teammate Alberto Delgado defected from the Cuban national team during the team's stay in Los Angeles for the CONCACAF Gold Cup.

The Burn dodged a bullet in the 70th minute, when Martinez ripped a shot on net, forcing a diving save from Cassar. The ball fell out wide, where Antonio de la Torre sent it back across the goalmouth for a waiting John Spencer, who turned the ball back toward the open net, but Cassar was able to make the second save to preserve the deadlock.

The Rapids were reduced to ten men in the 86th minute when Darryl Powell was shown his second yellow card of the evening, after he clipped Dallas forward Eddie Johnson from behind as he was rushing downfield with the ball on a quick counter.

Dallas extended their unbeaten streak to three games with the result, and return to the Cotton Bowl on Saturday, June 26 to face D.C. United live on ESPN2 (4 p.m. ET). The Rapids will travel to Columbus to face the Crew, also on Saturday at 7:30 pm ET.
