Earthquakes defeat Chivas USA 3-0

Roger Levesque

Carson, Calif. - The San Jose Earthquakes earned a 3-0 victory over Chivas USA at The Home Depot Center. Wes Hart, Roger Levesque and Julian Nash all scored for the Quakes in the 90-minute exhibition match. The game was divided into three 30-minute periods and the Quakes scored in all three periods.

San Jose scored first in the seventh minute on a goal by Hart. Ricardo Clark started the play with a pass out to Hart on the right side. Hart then slid a ball down to Ronald Cerritos, who dribbled to the endline before sending a cross into the front of the net. Hart then headed the ball into the net for a 1-0 lead.
In the second 30-minute period, Levesque moved the Quakes out to a 2-0 lead with a goal off a rebound. Rookie Chris Wondolowski picked up the ball at the top of the 18-yard box and blasted a shot that the goalkeeper was only able to block. Levesque then pounced on the loose ball and tucked it into the net.
San Jose put the game out of reach in the third period with a goal by trialist Julian Nash. Rookie third round draft pick Orlando Ramirez got the ball in his own half and slipped a through ball to Nash, who broke in alone on goal. Nash touched the ball past the goalkeeper to put San Jose up 3-0.
The Quakes now possess a 4-2-2 record in the preseason and will face the U.S. National Team on Sunday in their next preseason game.

Quotes:

Craig Waibel, on game:
"It was clearly our best showing of the preseason. Our combination play was very good and our players are starting to gel. Today was the first glimpse of the style of play that I think we are capable of both offensively and defensively."
Waibel, on defense:
"Today was a good showing defensively from front to back. Our midfield really shut them down. As an 11-man unit, we were very good. Ronald (Cerritos) and Alejandro (Moreno) started it all with very good pressure up front and they forced a lot of turnovers. In the back, we didn't give up too many shots so we felt good about our performance."
