Earthquakes 3, Galaxy 1 -- quote sheet

MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER QUOTE SHEET
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 15, 2005 - SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES 3, LOS ANGELES GALAXY 1

LOS ANGELES GALAXY HEAD COACH STEVE SAMPSON

On the match:
"It was a strange beginning to the game with the red card of Tyrone (Marshall). I thought that impacted us substantially. Our loss of Tyrone versus their loss of Kevin (Goldthwaite); I think ours was the greater loss. Obviously, we played a very good team in San Jose, and the second goal by Dwayne (De Rosario) was a world-class goal. It really took the wind out of our sails going into halftime. I have to give him credit for scoring a goal like that."

On scoring chances:
"In the second half, it was just a matter of us missing chances. We created enough to tie the match. They scored an outstanding goal in the second half with literally five or six combined passes with a great finish, and that was the difference. They put theirs on target, and we didn't tonight. Next week, we can't afford to give up the number of opportunities that we gave up tonight. An unfortunate set of circumstances, but we look forward to playing them next week."

LOS ANGELES GALAXY DEFENDER CHRIS ALBRIGHT

On the game:
"I thought it was OK. I thought we were in the game until we let the first goal in ... that obviously hurt us."

On playing against the same team next week:
"We're (Galaxy and Earthquakes) rivals and they kicked our (butts) tonight. We obviously have some good fire to be ready for next weekend."

On the physical nature of the match:
"They're a physical team and they certainly outhustled tonight a bit. We've got to make adjustments and get a little tougher in order to get up and play against these guys."

LOS ANGELES GALAXY MIDFIELDER PETE VAGENAS

On the game:
"It was a tough and obviously an intense game when(ever) these two teams meet. That being said, the unexpected happened when we lost Tyrone early in the game, but then they lost their man as well. It kind of threw our rhythm off. It was good because it showed us another side of the game that we have to be prepared for. And when it gets down to a good team, the second half was much better than the first. But that being said, this team (San Jose) has sort brought us down to reality in a sense."

On playing against the same team next week:
"It's good and it's somebody I obviously like to face and somebody we have to face to get to the top. So be it. We're all excited and we can't wait."

On possible changes for next week:
"Obviously there will be some adjustments, but in terms of changes, we're at the point of the season where we think we're as good as anybody and it's just a matter of bringing that to the game."

LOS ANGELES GALAXY FORWARD LANDON DONOVAN

On the game:
"It was a tough start with the red card. It helped a little bit with getting (Kevin) Goldthwaite thrown out, but I don't think Tyrone Marshall for Goldthwaite is a good scenario for us. It's not a good swap for us, but give them credit, they scored three really good goals and we just have to get ready for next week."

On playing against the same team next week:
"Missing Tyrone is going to be tough, but we have to find a way to get a result and we can't get down early. We can't get down two goals early - that kills us. We've got to find a way to start the game better."

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES HEAD COACH DOMINIC KINNEAR

On the game:
"Very happy with the result tonight. We defended well and we broke well when we needed to. We were very resilient tonight and some stuff went against us, but we finished off with some nice goals. Dwayne's goal was special tonight and the third goal was great because we won the ball and broke and finished with a great play for the goal."

On looking ahead to playoffs against Galaxy:
"It is going to be a great two weeks against the Galaxy. It is going to be competitive, spirited and emotions will be running high. They are a good team, so we know that we have to come out play well against them. I think it is the best rivalry in MLS, so we are looking forward to it."

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES MIDFIELDER DWAYNE DE ROSARIO

On his goal:
"I definitely wanted it to go there. Usually I let (Mark) Chung hit that shot, but I felt good when I was approaching the ball and you just have to have faith in your abilities sometimes. Fortunately it went into the net. It was great to get three points tonight."

On setting an MLS record with only four losses:
"It is a great achievement for us. All over the field, we have had great performances this season from the back to the front. Pat Onstad has been great in goal and our back four have been solid all year and the midfield has been doing its job as well, along with the forwards. The team deserves what we have achieved so far."

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES MIDFIELDER BRIAN MULLAN

On the team's performance:
"The team just continues to work and get great results. I am so proud of this team for what we have done this season, but we still have a lot of work ahead of us. We are all looking forward to the playoffs and we just want to keep doing what we have been doing all season."

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES DEFENDER DANNY CALIFF

On the defense:
"We have had pretty good continuity in the back, so we all understand each other very well now. Eddie (Robinson), Wade (Barrett) and Kelly (Gray) have been great, but overall, we have done well defending as a team. Pat (Onstad) has also been strong for us, so you have to give credit all around."

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES MIDFIELDER MARK CHUNG

On his goal:
"Brian Mullan did well in the corner and I just snuck in at the back post and got a head on it. Mullan did all the work and all I had to do was get my head on it and finish."
