Chivas, Santos meet in doubleheader

DALLAS - Hunt Sports Group, in conjunction with Coors Light, announced today that Mexican First Division teams Club Deportivo Guadalajara, also known as Chivas Rayadas de Guadalajara, and Club Santos Laguna will be part of a doubleheader on Saturday, August 7 at the Cotton Bowl. The match will mark the first time the Chivas Rayadas have visited Dallas since finishing as runner-up in the Mexican League and the first time these two teams will go head-to-head in Dallas.

The Dallas Burn will square off against the Colorado Rapids at 6:00 p.m. with the two Mexican powers kicking off at approximately 8:00 p.m. The game is the third of four matches that make up the Coors Light 2004 Chivas Rayadas Summer Tournament.

Chivas has established itself as the most recognized and popular team in Mexico. The club, established in 1906, has won a total of 10 local championships, including four in a row (1959-1962). Continuing a long-lasting tradition, Chivas Rayadas de Guadalajara has conquered all of their national and international championships utilizing only Mexican-born players on their team.

Santos Laguna has been a tremendous success story in Mexican soccer. Having ascended from the Second Division in 1988, Santos went on to win First Division championships in 1996 and 2001 while finishing second in 1994 and 2000. The team also made it to the quarter-finals in the 2004 Copa Libertadores.

Chivas and Santos Laguna will arrive in Dallas on Thursday, August 5 and it is anticipated the two teams will train locally the day before the match. Practice times and locations will be released at a later date. With the Mexican League season set to kick off a week later, both squads are expected to bring their best available players. Chivas will bring their National Team players that played in Copa America 2004 in Peru such as Oswaldo Sanchez, Francisco Palencia, Ramoncito Morales, and Bofo Bautista. Chivas will also premiere Benjamín "The Teacher" Galindo, a new coach who was appointed as the new leader of the so-called Sacred Flock in late June.
