Freddy Adu

Behind the badge: Permit time

but Freddy Adu might be driving this time. On Wednesday, Adu passed his test to obtain a learners' permit, enabling him to drive under the supervision of an adult. He will receive his full license when he turns 16 year and one month on July 2.

"I bought her that car and I can't even drive it," Adu said jokingly after his mother announced she would remain behind the wheel for the drive home from training yesterday at RFK Stadium. "It's nice to have my permit," continued Adu. "I feel more independent now that I'm closer to being able to go out and do things on my own."

However Freddy gets to the game, he and the rest of D.C. United will play this Saturday as the Black-and-Red begin their 2004 MLS Cup defense against Club Deportivo Chivas USA, who share The Home Depot Center with The Los Angles Galaxy. This is the opening game for the 2005 regular season and will be aired at 3 p.m. ET on ABC.

Adu will need an experienced chauffeur to navigate the streets of L.A. following the game, though. After the final whistle, the teenager is scheduled to attend Nickelodeon's Kids' Choice Awards hosted by Ben Stiller on Nickelodeon at 8 p.m. ET.

Adu will also appear Friday on the ESPN 2 show "Cold Pizza." "Cold Pizza," known as "The Morning Show With Everything" airs live from New York City on weekdays from 8-10 a.m. ET. The show offers a unique blend of sports and entertainment "customized for ESPN viewers."

In addition, Adu is among the topics discussed in the 2005 edition of MTV's "Fake ID Club." The program depicts Adu as one of the top five teen celebrities today. The show is scheduled to appear for the first time prior to D.C. United's home opener on April 9 on MTV. The show will be run again April 10 at 10 a.m. ET and a third time on April 11 at 2 p.m. ET.

After attending the NBA game, Merritt will participate in a "Dating Game" before an audience of singles having purchased tickets to the event. The Wizards introduced the popular promotion earlier this season and welcomed Alecko Eskandarian during another singles event shortly after the forward had claimed MVP honors at the 2004 MLS Cup. Other athletes who have participated include Will Demps (Baltimore Ravens), Brendan Haywood and Laron Profit (Wizards).
