Barrett: Numbers game redux

Wade Barrett

One point, Quakes fans, one point one point one point. Eon pinto, oen ponit, neo pinot. I know you have all been craving another edition of The Number Game with Captain Idiot, and the tie against the Burn (See footnote 1) this past weekend was just the springboard I needed to get back in the numbers pool. It's amazing to me how many different ways there are to look at ties in this league. Without a doubt, some one-pointers feel like heartbreaking losses. Our 3-3 tie against Chivas USA this year was a good example. We took a 3-2 lead into the waning moments only to let in a goal on a set piece. Believe me, the locker room was not a fun place to be after that one. Some draws are pretty fair results, as evidenced in our first game at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake. We were down a goal, but had created the majority of the chances and were deserving of Alejandro's goal from a great Brian Mullan cross late in the game.

Last Saturday's game in Dallas, though, is a perfect example of a tie feeling like a win. No, we did not get three points, which we were expecting in the buildup to kickoff, but soccer is an ever-changing game. The Wednesday game against Colorado meant a quick turnaround back on the field, and the steam bath that surrounds the state of Texas in the summertime meant that no matter how many bottles of Gatorade or water (10 for me starting from 8 a.m.) you consumed, you couldn't stay hydrated. Combine those two things with the unjust red card (See footnote 2), and you're looking at a team that was happy with one point. So without further ramblings, here is this week's Diary - a tribute to the number of numbers.

I take ---, ---, --- cause you left me and two, two, two for my family...
What if God was --- of us, just a stranger on the bus...
You're still the --- who can scratch my itch, still the ---, and I wouldn't switch...
We are the World, we are the children, we are the ---- who make a brighter day...
--- love! --- heart! Let's get together and feel all right...

One - the number of red cards I have received in my MLS career. (See footnote 3)
One - the number of goals I've scored this year. (I've already hit my quota)
One (hundred) - the number of times Brad Davis has called me Wes.

One.
Uno.
Et.

I get really bummed out by people that ride unicycles.
One out of every 111 people has a unibrow.
I don't like to admit it, but I look pretty sweet in a unitard.

Lance Armstrong - No. 1 in the Tour de France after Tuesday's Stage 4
Roger Federer - No. 1 player at Wimbledon for the last three years.
Takeru "The Tsunami" Kobayashi - #1 at the Nathan's Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest

I spotted the first gray hair on my head about 9 years ago.
I spotted the first gray hair in my beard about 9 months ago.
My first trip to get my hair and beard colored red is tomorrow.

Well, that's it for now. My first cup of coffee needs a refill.

Holler,
Wade

  1. Hey, I know they changed their name, but they will always be the Burn to me.
  2. Hey, I'm biased. So what?
  3. Hey, this was awesome. It was my first year in the league, and I had just broken into the starting lineup. We had a Saturday game in New York and a Wednesday game in D.C. in the same trip. I had a ton of family and friends lined up to see both games. Seventeen minutes into the first game, I jackhammer Giovanni Savarese from behind and get sent off. Way to show Mom and Dad how far along I had come as a player!
