Career Summary

MLS Career Highlights: Had started all 101 games in which he appeared entering  this season… Had 34 shutouts, including a career-high 11 in 2010, to his credit… Was a  MLS Goalkeeper of the Year finalist in 2008… Had a career-high 11 saves against CHI on  7/11/09... Made his first-team league debut for K.C. on 6/10/06 at Crew Stadium, making  three saves to post his first win and first shutout, 1-0, over the Crew... Acquired by the Crew allocation... Originally selected by Kansas City in the second round (No. 17 overall) of the second goalkeeper in MLS history to score a goal... 2010 MLS Season: Appeared and started in 30 matches... Had 11 shutouts (3/27, 4/24,  5/15, 5/23, 6/26, 7/10, 7/17, 7/24, 8/28, 9/4, 10/2)... Had three yellow cards (5/23,  8/21, 9/25)... Became the all-time Crew leader in shutouts with a clean sheet at KC on  5/23... Played his 100th MLS match on 10/16.... Celebrated his 100th MLS match by scor-ing a goal in stoppage time on 10/16... Is only the second goalkeeper to score a goal in MLS  history.. Was forced to leave final game of regular season (10/24) with a broken shoulder and  was replaced by midfielder Eddie Gaven. 

2009 MLS Season: Appeared and started in 19 matches… Had a career-high 11 saves  on 7/11 at Chicago… Had seven shutouts... Had one yellow card... Missed matches on  4/25, 5/2 and 5/9 with L knee sprain... Missed matches on 5/17, 5/27, 5/30, 6/6 and  6/14 with lumbar strain.

2009 MLS Cup Playoffs: Started both playoff matches against  RSL, finishing with a 0-2-0 record and 2.00 goals-against-average.

2009-10 CONCACAF Champions League: Appeared and started in all six matches… Had two shutouts… Had  one yellow card. 

2008 MLS Season: Appeared in and started 29 games... Finished with a league-best  record of 17-6-6 and tied for the league lead with 10 shutouts... Ranked third in goals-against  average (1.14)... Saved three of five penalty kick attempts (3/29 vs. TFC, 4/5 at N.Y. and  5/24 vs. N.E.).

2008 MLS Cup Playoffs: Started in all four matches in Crew’s run to  MLS Cup title... Finished with a 3-0-1 record and 0.75 goals-against average... Registered  first career playoff shutout on 11/8 vs. K.C.

2008 U.S. Open Cup: Started Open Cup  qualifier at Chicago (in Peoria, Ill.) on 6/10, a 3-2 loss in OT. 

2007 MLS Season: Started all 20 games in which he appeared... Had a then career-high  nine saves against K.C. on 9/16... Had five shutouts on the season... Backstopped the Crew  to a six-game unbeaten streak (4-0-2) from 6/16-7/7... Notched his first shutout as a member  of the Crew on 6/30 vs. N.Y. ...  Made his Crew debut on 6/16 at N.E... Missed seven  games to start the season due to a right hamstring injury. 

2006 MLS Season: Went 1-2-0 in three games, with the victory coming in his first-team  league debut 6/10 at Columbus. Made three saves to post 1-0 shutout.

2006 U.S. Open Cup: the full 90 minutes in 2-0 Round of 16 loss to Chicago on 8/14.  

2005 MLS Season: Earned promotion from developmental roster to the  senior squad and assumed role of  backup goalkeeper, but did not appear in  a regular-season match.

2005 Reserve Division: Made 10 starts, posting a  5-3-2 record with a 1.44 GAA and three  shutouts.

2005 U.S. Open Cup: Made  two starts in Open Cup play, earning a 6-1 8/3 in the fourth round. 

2004 MLS Season: Spent his rookie  professional season on the developmental  roster, but did not appear in a regular-season  match. 

Other Pro Highlights: Has twice been  called into extended U.S. National Team  camps in January (2008, 2009)... Was a  member of the Generation adidas Euro Tour  squad that played three games in England and the games went the full 90 minutes of  a 1-0 loss to the Coventry City Reserves on  12/5/06.  

College: Compiled a record of 37-12-6  in four years at Wake Forest (2000-03)…  Compiled a 0.83 goals-against average,  .802 save percentage, 201 saves and  5,298 minutes… Named the 2003-04  Wake Forest University Student-Athlete of  the Year... 2003: Was named a NSCAA/ adidas and Soccer America All-American  despite playing in just 15 games as a  senior... Posted a 0.77 GAA before suffering  a leg injury in the second-to-last game of the  regular season... Missed the ACC tourna-ment and NCAA tournament due to the  injury… 2002: Turned in the best season  by a goalkeeper in Wake Forest history as  a junior... Posted nine shutouts and set a  school single-season record with a 0.65  goals-against average... Had a scoreless  streak of 569 minutes from 9/21 against St.  John’s until 10/19 against Clemson, a streak  that included five complete shutouts... Ranked  second nationally in GAA… Was named  a Soccer America first-team All-American  and a second-team NSCAA All-American...  Named first-team All-ACC and All-South... 2001: A second-team All-ACC selection,  started all 21 games in goal and posted goalkeeper since 1991… 2000: Named to  ACC All-Tournament team as a freshman, al-lowing just three goals in 240 minutes while  making 24 saves... Made his career debut  as a surprise starter in the regular-season  postseason games. 

Personal: The son of Russell and Janet  Hesmer… Has a sister, Anna Jane, and All-American at Wake Forest, where he majored  in History… Served as a groomsman in team-mate Brian Carroll’s wedding... An excellent  athlete who was named all-conference in  basketball, football, baseball and soccer  in high school... Named 2000 Athlete of  member of the National Honor Society in  high school... Enjoys golfing and fishing in  his spare time.
