HOW ACQUIRED: Signed from Portland Timbers along with a 2021 Natural 1st Round MLS SuperDraft Pick (16th overall), in exchange for the Galaxy’s 2021 Natural 1st Round SuperDraft Pick (8th overall). Portland may receive additional Allocation Money based on Villafaña’s performance with the Galaxy.
Villafaña won the first-ever Sueño MLS contest in 2007 and made his professional debut with Chivas USA on September 9, 2007. The left back won the 2015 MLS Cup and the 2020 MLS is Back Tournament during two spells with the Portland Timbers and made his US Men's National Team debut in a 0-0 friendly with Serbia on January 29, 2017.
INTERNATIONAL: Villafaña has earned 21 caps for the US national team, including six appearances (6 starts) during qualifiers for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. Additionally, since making his senior team debut for the United States on July 26, 2017, Villafaña helped the team win the Concacaf Gold Cup trophy in 2017, making four appearances (4 starts) in the tournament.
OUTSIDE MLS: Villafaña rejoined the Timbers after spending three Liga MX campaigns (2015-18) with Santos Laguna. During that stretch, Villafaña posted 60 league appearances (57 starts), while helping the club win its sixth Liga MX title this past season.
