HOW ACQUIRED: Trade with Seattle Sounders FC on January 26, 2015

Zabaleta begins his fifth season in the league looking to build on the standards he set in 2016, after having locked down a starting role on the backline in the second half of TFC's season, including playing every minute of the Reds' run to the Eastern Conference Championship. 

COLLEGE: Zavaleta played for Indiana University. In 2012, he was a unanimous selection as Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year and First Team All-Big Ten selection. Named to Big Ten All-Tournament team and College Cup All-Tournament team. He had the NCAA championship clinching assist and was College Soccer News first team All-American, NSCAA third-team All-American, Soccer America MVP first team, and Chicagoland Soccer News Player of the Year. In 2011, Zavaleta was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year, a unanimous selection to the All-Big Ten first team and Big Ten All-Freshman team. College Soccer News All-Freshman first team, Soccer America All-Freshman first team, Chicagoland Soccer News Player of the Year, and NSCAA All-Great Lakes Region first team.

INTERNATIONAL: Zavaleta spent his sophomore and junior years as a member of the U.S. Soccer U-17 National Team Residency Program in Bradenton, Fla. He helped the U.S. advance to the round of 16 at the 2009 U-17 World Cup and won the Copa Macae in Brazil with the U-17s. He has also been  a member of the U.S. U-20 Men's National Team pool. He is eligible to play for El Salvador via his father Carlos, who represented los Cuscatlecos internationally.
