Manchester City to face Club América in World Football Challenge

SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco Giants won’t be the only title-holders playing in AT&T Park this summer.

English giants Manchester City, recent FA Cup winners, are set to take on storied Mexican side Club América on July 16 at 8 pm ET in San Francisco as part of the 2011 Herbalife World Football Challenge.

The match will be the first for both teams in the World Football Challenge. The Citizens are scheduled to play twice more in the competition, including matches against MLS teams Vancouver Whitecaps and LA Galaxy on July 18 and July 24, respectively.

Las Águilas, on the other hand, are penciled in for a tilt against La Liga champions and UEFA Champions League finalists FC Barcelona in Arlington, Texas, on Aug. 3.

Manchester City finished third in the English Premier League this season with 71 points, earning them a long-awaited spot in the in the 2011-12 UEFA Champions League, their first appearance in the competition in 43 years.

América, meanwhile, finished sixth in the general table of the Mexican Primera División but concluded their bid for the Clausura 2011 crown early after falling in the quarterfinals to Monarcas Morelia. Their play in the Copa Libertadores also came to a premature halt after being ousted by Brazil’s Santos in the round of 16.

Manchester City vs. América is just one of 11 matches on tap in the World Football Challenge. Other participants include Barcelona, Manchester United and Chivas de Guadalajara, as well as MLS clubs LA Galaxy, New England, Vancouver, Philadelphia and Chicago. The competition is set to run from July 13 - Aug. 6.
