The Kansas City Wizards selected University of Akron striker and 2010 Hermann Trophy winner Teal Bunbury with the 4th overall pick in the MLS SuperDraft Thursday afternoon in Philadelphia. Bunbury is a member of the Generation adidas program, which allows players to enter MLS early while providing an opportunity to finish their education.
Bunbury makes history in joining the Wizards, as he is the first son of an MLS player to join an MLS team. His father Alex played professionally in Canada, England and Portugal before a two-year stint in MLS from 1999-2000, also with Kansas City. Alex Bunbury appeared 64 times for Canada's national team, scoring 16 goals between 1986-1997.
"It's an amazing feeling, being able to say that my dad played for the Kansas City Wizards and now I'm going to as well," Bunbury said. "I feel honored and privileged to carry on the Bunbury name in Major League Soccer."
Bunbury, 19, enjoyed a stellar college career at the University of Akron, scoring 23 goals and notching eight assists in his two years with the Zips. He scored 17 goals in 2009 alone, leading the nation. Akron qualified for the NCAA Championship game, losing to the University of Virginia on penalty kicks.
A native of Hamilton, Ontario, Bunbury has also represented Canada at the international level, making appearances for the U-17 and U-20 National Teams.
Wizards Manager Peter Vermes hopes that Bunbury's size (6-2, 175 lbs), speed, and adaptability will make him a valuable asset for the Wizards this season.
"He's a polished forward from the college game," Vermes said. We think he has a lot of talent and a huge upside."
