Two early goals lead Dynamo past Galaxy

The Houston Dynamo used two goals in the first 14 minutes to beat the Los Angeles Galaxy 2-0 on Thursday in a preseason friendly played at The Home Depot Center.

With both teams starting mostly first-choice lineups, although missing players due to international absences and injuries, the Dynamo broke on top in just the second minute. Midfielder Brad Davis executed a sharp turn in the left corner and curled a cross to the back post, where Galaxy defender Tony Sanneh - defending against Dynamo forward Kei Kamara - headed the ball into his own net.

Galaxy goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts made a big play just three minutes later, denying Chris Wondolowski from inside the penalty area after Wondolowski was set up by a Kamara header.

Houston doubled its lead in the 14th minute when a long throw-in found Kamara down the left side. His initial cross was blocked, but he spun inside the box and crossed the ball to the back post, where Brian Mullan powered a 12-yard header just inside the near post.

Goalkeeper Tyler Deric, a Dynamo Academy product on trial with the first team, took over for Pat Onstad in goal in the second half to make his pre-season debut. Deric made three saves to help preserve the clean sheet in his first professional action. His toughest stop came in the 70th minute, when Alan Gordon broke into the box, and Deric made a reflex save from close range.

Houston midfielder Stuart Holden made his first appearance of the pre-season, coming on in the 76th minute for Mullan. The Dynamo continue their pre-season schedule in the Central Coast Showcase on Sunday, February 15, when they face the San Jose Earthquakes in San Luis Obispo, Calif.
