MLS Classics - 2020 - DCvsNY promotion - May 5 stream

When a 16-year-old becomes a goalkeeper, albeit for 10 seconds, and scores the Golden Goal winner in a rivalry game, you know you’ve got to take a second look.

That’s the case in today’s edition of “MLS Classics,” where we relive one of the most memorable moments of the longstanding rivalry between D.C. United and the New York Red Bulls.

We head to steamy RFK Stadium on July 5, 2003 where then-MetroStars coach Bob Bradley exploited a loophole in the now defunct fourth substitution rule (for goalkeepers only).

Eddie Gaven replaced Tim Howard, handed the gloves back to the goalkeeper seconds later and scored the OT winner that earned Bradley the “Cheatin’ Bob” moniker in the nation’s capital.

It was strange to see live so this one definitely deserves a second look.

To help you prepare, check out a detailed history of the Atlantic Cup rivalry and find out what Gaven is up to today.

As always, you can find the entire list of MLS Classics here
