Based on MLS Cups alone, the LA Galaxy are the most successful club in MLS history as five-time champions. But it all had to start somewhere.

Their origin story officially began 25 years ago, when they hosted the New York/New Jersey MetroStars before 69,255 fans at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif. The match featured plenty of US men’s national team stars, too, including forward Cobi Jones for the home side and goalkeeper Tony Meola for the visitors.

A handful of current MLS coaches also featured, with Robin Fraser (Colorado Rapids) suiting up for the Galaxy and Peter Vermes (Sporting Kansas City) and Giovanni Savarese (Portland Timbers) starting for the MetroStars.
