Brighi brings Roma to head of Group A

Roma

Second-half goals from Matteo Brighi and Francesco Totti gave Roma victory against a resilient Bordeaux to take the Italian side into the Champions League knock-out stages as the winners of Group A.

Brighi opened the scoring shortly after the hour mark before Totti killed the game off 11 minutes from time.

The hosts kicked off knowing a point would be enough to guarantee progress yet they were on the back foot throughout against visitors who needed victory to maintain their own hopes of reaching the last 16.

Coach Laurent Blanc had promised Bordeaux would attack and his team were as good as his word from the start with Alexander Doni having to make a save from Yoan Goufrann's acrobatic kick.

Julio Baptista twice had the chance to put Roma ahead early on.

His curled free-kick went just wide off the far post while shortly after, he fired high over the crossbar from the edge of the area.

Though Roma looked composed in possession the visitors continued to dominate but struggled to find the finishing touch.

In the 25th minute, Yoann Gourcuff came close, latching onto a corner only for his header towards the target to be cleared away by Juan.

Shortly after the half-hour mark, Wendel tried his luck from the distance but his powerful effort went straight to the stands.

Roma were quite happy to let Bordeaux take the initiative and hit them in the counter-attack.

Gourcuff fired high to the stands at the end of an uninspiring first half, but Bordeaux showed more determination after the re-start and looked to have broken the deadlock in the 51st minute with Marouane Chamakh's right footed-shot from the edge of the box going inches wide of Doni's near post.

Gourcuff then created an opportunity for Chamakh but the latter took too long and the danger was snuffed out by Philippe Mexes.

At the other end, goalkeeper Ulrich Rame punched away Daniele De Rossi's powerful free-kick.

Then just when Bordeaux where playing at their best, Roma struck. Brighi tapped in Perrotta's cross from the right to beat Rame.

The goal proved a bitter blow for the visitors as the Giallorossi took control.

Perrotta's header from the heart of the area was saved by the keeper before Jeremy Menez wasted a good chance when he nodded Totti's corner off target from inside the area.

Bordeaux should have equalised with 15 minutes remaining but Doni kept out Gourcuff's strike towards the far post from the edge of the area at full stretch.

There was little Bordeaux could do to deny Roma's second.

A fast break from the hosts saw Menez's searching pass find Totti at the edge of the box, who fired a right-footed effort towards the bottom-left corner to put the game beyond their rival's reach.

The French had the last chance of the game with substitute Jussie firing just wide of Doni's far post as Bordeaux have to settle for a UEFA Cup place.
