Chicago Fire announce reigning MLS MVP Mike Magee has signed a new contract

Less than six months after being named MLS' 2013 Volkswagen MVP, Chicago Fire forward Mike Magee has been rewarded with a new deal.

The club announced the renewal of the forward's contract on Thursday afternoon. Per league and team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Magee returned to his hometown Fire in a trade in May 2013 from the LA Galaxy. In 22 games last season with Chicago, he scored 15 goals and tallied four assists. Prior to joining the Fire, Magee scored six goals with the Galaxy to start the year, bringing his season total to 21 goals, just one shy of the 2013 MLS Golden Boot title.

“Mike is a proven winner,” said head coach Frank Yallop in a statement. “He has shown throughout his time in Chicago and in MLS that he can score goals and consistently perform at the highest level. Mike has earned this new contract and we’re happy that we were able to reach a new deal.”

“As a kid, I would have paid to play for the Chicago Fire, so as you can imagine, I’m beyond happy to have signed a new deal,” said Magee in a statement. “My only goal with this team is to win an MLS Cup.”

In addition to the MVP honors, Magee was also named an MLS All-Star for the first time last year, and was a member of the MLS Best XI for the 2013 season.

So far in 2014, Magee has scored one goal in three league appearances after missing out on Chicago's first two games of the year.
