Portland Timbers sign captain Will Johnson to new multi-year contract

The captain of the Portland Timbers is set to remain with the team he helped revitalize.

Timbers owner and president Merritt Paulson tweeted Monday that midfielder Will Johnson has agreed to a new contract with the club:

The club confirmed the news officially later on Monday, announcing a new multi-year deal with the 27-year-old, though further terms were not disclosed, per team and league policy.

Johnson, a Canadian international, joined the Timbers for the 2013 season, after five seasons with Real Salt Lake. Named captain of the team by coach Caleb Porter upon his arrival, he led the Timbers to their first-ever MLS Cup playoffs berth, notching career highs in goals and assists last season.

He was also named an MLS All-Star last year, and voted to the MLS Best XI in 2013.
